The first thing to do is educate yourself on what to look for on food and drug labels. Maggie is not gluten intolerant but has an allergy to wheat protein itself. Maggie is also allergic to : egg, cow milk, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, corn, cabbage, asparagus, grapefruit, peppers, tomatoes, and beef. Maggie has been sharing with others the importance of reading labels not only on foods but on toys and pharmaceuticals. Maggie has had Anaphylaxia reactions to play dough, multiple medication containing corn, lip balm, many foods including some produce that is coated with chemicals for preservation and even molds on fruits not visible to the human eye. Maggie has shared her experiences as a multi allergy sufferer with the community. Sharing how to identify hidden ingredients not only in food but also in medications. Maggie has educated her peers in how to recognize signs of Anaphylaxia and about the importance of epi-pens and how to use them. Maggie recently exhibited several allergy free baked goods at the county fair with many being considered for state fair. Her allergy free sandwich bread is currently on exhibit at the Iowa State Fair! No matter how careful an allergy suffer is there is no way to detect trace amounts of allergens to prevent anphalaxus. An Allergy Alert Dog is a valuable tool for a person with a severe allergy. Since a dog?s sense of smell far surpasses that of humans, detection of odors is a perfect job for these dogs. Allergy Alert Dogs, undergo extensive training, are easily able to detect minute quantities of peanuts in any form; raw, cooked, oil, butter, dust, etc. The Allergy Alert Dog, although a pioneer, has already proven to be an incomparable and diligent assistant, devoted to preventing contact with peanut residue and thereby, a severe allergic reaction. Trainee candidates are carefully selected, tested and screened for temperament and characteristics that will allow them to be both a working dog and a family companion. The saying, "Dog is man's best friend." is never more true for those who depend on service dogs. A service dog can make a huge difference in the life of a person in need. They allow freedom and independence as well as a sense of security and trust to their masters. These service dogs can be used as early detection for Allergy patients, saving them from having anaphalaxus. Unfortunately, these dogs require intense training that can cost thousands of dollars on top of the usual pet care expenses. Service dogs can cost up to $30,000 to train a prohibitive expense for people already facing medical expenses. But we are asking our friends and family to help Maggie get the freedom that comes with a service dog.
