About
The Reverend George B. Hitchcock House located 1 mile west and 1/2 mile south of Lewis, Iowa has been designated a National Historic Landmark due to its involvement in the Underground Railroad prior to the Civil War. The house was a safe haven for fugitive slaves (or Freedom Seekers) as they made the dangerous journey through southwestern Iowa from slavery to Canada and freedom.
